That night Raymond stood guard. He and Pat, his wife of nearly fifty years, sat in their pickup with their dogs in the back. Any approaching elk would get barked, hi-beamed and hoorahed away! Within three days they were comfortably grazing within ten feet of the pickup where the bored dogs dozed through the night and the shouts were ignored.
In atmospheric exposure tests in a severe marine sub-tropical area (equivalent to Fraser Island) 445M2 was almost completely free of rusting (or tea staining) after 2 years exposure. 316 was uniformly tea stained.
Clarence Jeffries, also born in Wallsend, was awarded his VC posthumously after being killed in action in France on October 12, 1917, after capturing a number of machine-gun dug-outs. William Jackson, Australia’s youngest VC winner at 18, was recognised for his bravery in France in 1916 when he had his arm blown off while rescuing wounded from no-man’s land, returning to look for comrades even after being wounded. Jackson lived at Merriwa on his return from the war before moving to Wollongong.
When we reached the end of the field I caught up with Russ. Russ is a big big feller. He had on camouflage pants, a fluorescent hunting jacket, rubber boots and a yellow cap. He looked like a whitewater raft. He was pointing out a Cadillac Limousine parked out in the field. One of the South Dakota hosts had brought a load of celebrity hunters down in it. We had been told that each team had a Fish & Game guide, a paramedic and a radio dispatched helicopter pilot standing by at our immediate service, so I didn’t think it unusual for a funeral director to be on call either.

Now I’m sittin’ out on the back porch one afternoon in my porch swing. It’s about 2:30. I’m done workin’. I’ve already thought up somethin’. I look out in the driveway and there’s my good dog and he has got a…and you know how you can tell it ain’t a jackrabbit? They aren’t black and white, they don’t have them big floppy ears, and he has got this rabbit between his teeth and he’s thrashin’ him like a shark with a ham hock! There’s dirt and leaves and brush and gravel flyin’ all over. I jumped up and grabbed that rabbit! “Go git in the pickup you *#@%5E…!” That rabbit looked bad. Looked like he caught on fire and somebody put him out with the weedeater!
Bruno tore back around the corner, stormed up the chute and bit Mr. Schneider on the ham! They loaded in the chute alright, slick as you please. All three of ‘em.
Directed and designed by Rithy Panh Music by Him Sophy Libretto by Trent Walker Presented in association with Cambodian Living Arts Part of the 2017 Next Wave Festival Two survivors of the Khmer Rouge—composer Him Sophy and filmmaker Rithy Panh (The Missing Picture)—attempt to return dignity to their country’s dead with this musical ritual remembering the Cambodian genocide. Against cinematic evocations of this bruised history, Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia recruits the Metropolis Ensemble, a 12-voice choir, and traditional Khmer vocalists and instruments—ancient harps, flutes, and the xylophone-like roneat pluah—to mourn the nearly two million forgotten souls. Mellifluous Buddhist smot chanting and other all-but-extinct Khmer musical forms are woven throughout a procession that moves from the heavens to the killing fields, culminating in a plea to recognize impermanence as the only path to peace. Film by Rithy Panh Stage direction by Gideon Obarzanek Music direction and conducting by Andrew Cyr Lighting design by Bosco Shaw Costume design by Romyda Keth Original idea by Charley Todd Commissioned by CAMBODIAN LIVING ARTS. Since then we have become a country full of hate and ugliness. It’s so PERSONAL. Martin Luther King’s dream of diversity has become so twisted by the government that we are more segregated than ever. Our “leaders”; the politicians, media, and the entertainment puppets swamp us in an ocean of hatred and malice, of blame and blatant lies…like a band of back-stabbers whose intent is to vilify and slander.

The vocal gymnastics Amy Lynn Zanetto can pull off in a mini-dress and stilettos would have Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Mariah Carey on their feet by curtain call. As each of these women has done before her, Amy Lynn brings her own unique flair to the diva tradition, adding a quirky, down-to-earth humor to her front woman role that lands Amy Lynn and Gunshow in a league of their own. The Gunshow, lead by lovebirds, Amy & Alex, has a 60′s pop and soul sound marked by powerhouse singers and infectious horn licks as especially fertile ground on which to showcase their combined talents. Together and apart they have played all around the world gracing the stage with Duffy, St. Vincent, Lucy Woodward, Yo La Tengo, Spoon, The Radio City Orchestra and many more. Just recently Amy & Alex’s song "Missing You" was on the WB networks show "Big Easy Brides". They have been played on radio stations throughout the US, Canada, and Japan. Given the Gunshow’s standout showmanship and feel-good energy, it’s no wonder that their performances at NYC’s top venues, including Joe’s Pub, Highline Ballroom, The Mercury Lounge, The Bitter End, and The Bell House, have met with glowing reviews. I’ve got a neighbor. A good neighbor. And when you live on the outskirts, a good neighbor is someone who lives just the right distance away. Close enough to circle the wagons but far enough away to allow that privacy people like us seem to value, (“I believe those are Kansas plates, mother,” he said sighting through his binoculars).
We’re part of a long train ride," is the way Peter Yarrow visualizes the many events that have highlighted a career spanning more than four decades. With characteristic care, Yarrow places the success he’s had within a greater context, seeing his accomplishments as part of a tradition, to be credited and carried on. "When I was in high school," he recalls, "I heard The Weavers’ concert at Carnegie Hall where they sang songs such as ‘If I Had a Hammer,’ and ‘Wasn’t That a Time.’ It was inspiring, and it showed me the extraordinary effect that music of conscience can have." That lesson launched Peter on a lifelong path that is now, perhaps, in its most vital phase.
Outteridge will get the chance to atone for that catastrophe when he and new crew Iain Jensen start as strong favourites in the 49er class at next month’s London Olympics.
