WHY SEE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC – HANDEL’S MESSIAH? Conducted by Gary Thor Wedow, the acclaimed New York Philharmonic Orchestra performs George Frideric Handel’s signature piece, Messiah. The piece was first performed in 1742 in Dublin, and has since become a firm favorite among classical music lovers. The piece is an oratorio, which is a musical work similar to an opera but performed utilizing the vocals of both soloists as well as a choir, and often without the same narrative structure as an opera. Handel’s Messiah is based on Biblical scripture. The 2015 season of New York Philharmonic’s annual performance of Messiah is conducted by Gary Thor Wedow, an Indiana native and now New York resident. Mr Wedow has conducted the city orchestras of New York, Seattle and Kansas City among many others, building one of the most formidable resumes in the country. This is in fact the second time he has conducted The Phil in a performance of The Messiah, having first done so in 2012.
