But then Kelly’s Wave burst upon the world, and a more broadcast-friendly contest was suddenly easy to picture. The W.S.L. bought Surf Ranch and began to step up its branding efforts. Surfers who had never paid much attention to the business of surfing found the W.S.L. logo stamped on more and more things: surf videos, music videos, Jeep ads, a chatbot. Contest Webcasts were moved to Facebook Watch, which many viewers loudly resented. Facebook? The initial Webcast didn’t even work. Even worse was the tone-deaf official announcement: “Facebook fosters a global community and, as surfing is a sport that celebrates and centers around community, we are proud to announce our media rights partnership with the platform.” (Cue vomit pantomimes.) The 2019 Pipe Masters was cancelled, for vague and unpersuasive reasons; so was this year’s Fiji event. The volume of online denunciations of the W.S.L. rose fearfully. Who were these kooks? (“Kook”—an all-purpose term of abuse in surf world.)

Commenter: BethanyI’m 49 years old and a professor. I took out a 4,000 dollar government guaranteed student loan in the mid-80s (chicken feed today. It was around that time that trading in debt must have begun because I remember being shocked to learn that my loan had been sold several times without my ever being informed and finally it was defaulted (by Sallie Mae) when it should not have been. A year of harrassing phone calls from collection agencies ensued. One day I reached the end of my psychological tether and in the middle of a particularly ugly harrassing phone call, burst out with "what are you going to do, send someone to come and break my legs?" The phone calls stopped for 16 years. My outburst was not strategic, but I learned a valuable lesson: you do not have to put up with harrassing phone calls from collection agencies and simply ignoring them and refusing to make payments will protect your health from stress related illness and possibly prevent you from ending up on the street. That’s my first comment. The second is that for nine years I taught at a liberal arts college in Massachusetts beginning in the late 90s. I was shocked at the cost (40,000 when I left, probably close to 50,000 now). I can tell you that NO education is worth that kind of money in this country. As other commentators have pointed out, most jobs in this country will never pay you enough to pay back this kind of money. What is sad is that the real worth of education isn’t economic; rather, education is necessary for democracies to function. There can be no democracy in a society where only the wealthy receive educations. The cost of higher education in this country is contributing to an ever increasing wage slave class – people who find themselves deeply in debt by the age of 21, who can’t earn enough money to ever pay the debt off, who can’t afford the health care that becomes even more necessary as stress, anxiety, and overwork wreck their health. And the government continues to bail out the very institutions that are profitting from disempowering the country’s citizens and destroying democracy by turning them into indentured servants. It is insanity to pay upwards of 100,000 for a college education – go to community college, buy books, read, and educate yourself. As an educator with experience teaching in both private and state schools, I can tell you that private education is in no way worth the money it costs.

The Hunter has also been connected to the great race through the success of a number of jockeys, including Wayne Harris, who rode Jeune to victory in 1994, Albert Shanahan, victorious on Posinatus in 1913 and Piastre in 1912, and Jim Pike, The Junction-born jockey who steered home the immortal Phar Lap in 1930.

They split us into teams. Mine was called Custer’s Last Chance and Bugle Corps. They hauled us out into the beautiful, rollin’ grain fields in Tripp County halfway between Dog Ear and Old Lodge Creek. Very quickly we formed into a cohesive family unit. If you’ve ever seen a troop of baboons high on bus fumes, you’ll be able to picture it. We lined up in a company front at the end of a milo field. It was as straight as a cracked windshield. At the signal from Wes, our team leader, we invaded the field with the precision and practiced skill of the Houston Oilers backfield coming ashore at the Bay of Pigs!

The fact that Kikukawa is willing to go to such lengths to please architects is one reason that the company is attracting business overseas. The logistics are complex but Utsuno, the company’s president, tells his staff to never decline a job that seems too difficult. Taking on assignments that are not part of Kikukawa’s repertoire, he says, has kept the company nimble and a step ahead of the industry. It’s something that he picked up from his father. “What we make does not have our brand name on it. But it is a visible part of building,” says Utsuno. “As long as we do a great job, architects and designers will find us.”

Those record labels include behemoths like Disney, which hired National Audio to produce “Guardians of the Galaxy” cassettes. They sold a million copies.

The person that answers that ad ought to know better than to set down and start askin’ about paid holidays, days off, cost of living escalators and a five year contract. However, if I don’t miss my guess, he’ll get a day’s pay for a day’s work, good grub, a warm bunk and that kind of “family feelin’” that comes with cowboyin’.

Civilizations are not new. They are as old as Noah’s banker. I’m certain there were civilized people in ancient Rome who could not milk a goat or catch a fish.

Since the Syrian government left the predominantly Kurdish area in northern Syria, the Syrian Kurds have been in control of some of the country’s largest oil fields in the Hassakeh province in the northeast starting in 2013.
