Commenter: Bob DanforthI had decided to go back to school and was given a great pep talk told I could definitely get in and handed a batch of papers to sign that would commit me to paying the school what would eventually cost about $50,000 and lay out a great career. Before I signed committing to pay the money, I asked what loans grants etc were available as I do not have that sort of money. I was told that they would help me get what was represented to be mostly grants but I would have to actually commit to paying the Tuition first, before I could apply for the Grants. They did such a good job of convincing me that I actually signed the papers, but after thinking it over realized that all their promises were talk and all mine were on paper. There was a 24hour escape clause and I took it just in time. It is easy to think that a starry eyed student of lesser years would not have had the second thoughts soon enough. I am self taught in Engineering and Design and get paid half what those who have degrees get and often find myself doing their work in any case, and have a harder time finding that work. That the many Vampires sucking our society dry might finally be pushed back in Health, Education, Military, Banking, and the myriad other ways more subtle was the Change I was hoping for. Unfortunately I see more Audacity than Hope.

That was it. The group that had rented the pool for the next block was already splashing past me, into position. If a religious revelation was out there, in the belly of the perfect wave, I would need time, much more time, to find it. I believed I could get this wave wired. I wanted to get a barrel, at least. Certainly find a different board. I mindlessly watched the next couple of waves. The surfers were good, but they kept getting clipped, falling off here and there. I felt both fired up and drained. It wasn’t as if I had gone surfing. That happened in a big, endlessly complicated world—the ocean—and usually lasted hours, for better or worse. This had been, what, five minutes? I was just starting to feel the rush. I wanted a hundred more. ♦

“Look out!” I shouted as a loose pig shot by her blind side followed by a sweaty boy with sawdust on his pants and a number flapping on his back.
"Lassiter stared back at the Onga beast as the crowd screamed for it to attack. And that’s what it finally did. Lassiter only licked his paw, like he didn’t even know the Onga beast was going to eat him."

The lower back is a lesson in symmetry, with the curved wings of the pelvis flaring out from the sacrum, which is cupped like an open palm and pierced with a line of paired holes. The coccyx curves up, beneath, a vestigial reminder of our simian origins. On an x-ray, the area resembles a butterfly or silver moth, pinned to a dark velvet board. There are parts of the body which, taken in magnified isolation, look strange or spindly or peculiar or unidentifiable, but the sacral area is unmistakable and unusually beautiful. It is part angel, part lepidopteran, part Rorschach inkblot.
FROM THE ARTICLE: “The luxury private submarine, from Dutch submersible manufacturer U-Boat Worx, can venture as deep as 300 metres underwater, and is so compact (3.2 metres long) and lightweight (3.8 tonnes) that it can fit on the deck of most superyachts. Manufactured in the Netherlands, the yacht can accommodate three people (a pilot and two passengers).”
