Now asleep in his chair, 89 years old. He has no scrapbook of his service, no contact with those of his caliber who went through the cauldron of war, no medals or pins commemorating his contribution. But comeback he did, only to be struck down by another tumour which he again beat. Add to that a list of injuries and Harris spent almost as much time in hospital beds as on horses.

It doesn’t just happen to vets! A pet shipping container arrived at the big city airport. As it was wending its way through the bowels of the baggage facility, one of the employees peeked into Skipper’s cage. She immediately removed the dog crate and called her supervisor. After some gentle nudging with a short stick they agreed that Skipper was stiff as a two by four and was, in fact, Dead!

I have never seen the Taj Mahal, the Vatican or Fort Knox, all monoliths wrapped in mystery, placed beyond politics, Google and the Rubix Cube. But I can now claim I have seen the FDA in the Land of Acronyms, Washington DC, and survived. In my case, it was the FDA, CVM … Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine.
