Small animal veterinary practice was always a mystery to me. When I escaped from vet school I never had any intention of curing anything that barked or played in a sandbox! But life is full of ironies. Through a series of set-backs I found myself out of work and starving. A local veterinarian proposed that I take over a small animal clinic for a week while he went to Yuma. Hunger will drive a proud man to do the most desperate things.

Rockin’ the NYC area since the ’70s, The Planets pound out a mix classic, roots, and punk rock at each show. Inspired by the British Invasion rock of the 1960s as well punk rock and new wave of the 70s and 80s, Bill Popp is a distinctive singer and prolific composer whose music is as melodic as it is energetic. In fact, the native New Yorker’s albums, including the recently released "Popp Hits The 60s", the follow up to 2011′s career spanning "25×30" (all of which are available on Popp’s own label, 121st Street Records), are so British influenced that, if you never heard Popp speak with a strong Queens accent, you’d swear he was British himself. Popp, who grew up in the working class section of Queens known as College Point, had yet to reach adolescence when he fell in love with the music of The Beatles. The singer was also drawn to fellow British Invasion icons like The Yardbirds, The Kinks and The Zombies, and the songs he composed at a young age clearly reflected his passion for strong melodies as well as rockin’ aggression. After graduating high school in the 70s, Popp became aware of punk and new wave – in fact, one of the first bands Popp led, The Popsicles, included guit… (read more)
When Shocking swooped up on the outside of British invader Crime Scene to win the 2009 Melbourne Cup, those in the know recognised it as a glory day for the Hunter as the champion stayer had been born and bred at George and Felicity Frazer’s Ilala Stud, two kilometres south of Scone on the New England Highway.
The first church built on the commanding site was a small slab hut in 1812, but in 1816 Governor Macquarie ordered a proper church be built and the foundation stone was laid in 1817, with Governor Macquarie himself naming the building Christ Church at an opening service on August 2 the following year, a glory day in itself as 10 marriages and 30 baptisms were performed that day alone.

The sideways ship windows are attached to plates with clips, which in turn attach to columns of telescope pieces (as shown in this photo from the next floor up, which has less clutter in front of the window).
We were waiting at the Tri County Airport when Mac dipped his wing and skidded down the runway. He crawled out on the wing. I noticed his hair was standing on end. He looked like he’d been castrating pigs in a metal building. You could almost hear his ears ringing. His eyes were glassy, his voice hoarse and he was vibrating.
The next thing I knew we were in the lingerie section of Tractor Supply. “What size, you reckon?” I asked. He said, “Well, you’ve been washing it for two days. Hold out yer hand!”
