Closer to home, those of us who belong to the land can count our blessings daily. We turn the earth and raise our livestock knowing in the recesses of our brain that we are an essential cog in the wheel of life. Our daily battles often obscure the contribution we make to mankind.

The Schooley Mountain Band is a NYC / New Jersey based blues-rock experience. Founded in 2012 by cousins Madison Gerish (vocals, acoustic guitar) and Michael Rieckert (lead guitar), the SMB delivers soulful, melodic vocals over driving and groovy jams. While The Schooley Mountain Band’s material is rooted in front-woman Madison Gerish’s early career as an acoustic singer/songwriter, it has since progressed into a dynamic and high energy sound, without abandoning Gerish’s melodic folk origins. Improvisation meets existential story telling, making The SMB the heart and soul of the NYC jam rock scene. Escape today’s trials and tribulations in the flowing and growing sonic space The Schooley Mountain Band continues to develop.

Singer/Songwriter and actor Brendan Hines (The Tick, Suits, Scandal, Lie To Me) pens post-love songs, insult ballads, and clever couplets catchy enough to be mistaken for sweet. His wry commentaries and overheard stories of heartbreak, isolation, excess, and humor are often compared to John Prine and Elvis Costello. The son of an erstwhile priest and nun turned philosophy professors, Brendan was raised in Baltimore, moved to New York and then Los Angeles; the pitch and roll of these three cities feature prominently in his lyrics. Hines’ first album, Good for You Know Who, was ten tracks of earnest, ear-wormy, alt-folk pith and vinegar. In 2012 he toured the U.S. with folk duo The Milk Carton Kids and released his second album, Small Mistakes. It marked the debut of a quieter, more contemplative side to Hines’ songs, with spare and haunting production by singer/songwriter David Poe and composer/producer Al Sgro. In the immediate aftermath of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, under the influence of a supermoon in the Joshua Tree desert, Hines and producers David Poe & Al Sgro assembled three other musicians and recorded the new album QUALMS. Angry, lyrically urgent and more vulner… (read more)

We’d spread the word that fresh clippings would be picked up Saturday and Sunday evenings. Participating Eco-sensitive residential yarders would set their plastic bags out. We’d pick it up, haul it to the dairy or feedlot, add silage preservative and put it in a pit. If it was put up fresh it might hold a worthwhile protein level. Of course, all participating yarders would have to guarantee that their lawn was organic; herbicide and pesticide-free.

The anvils look like paperweights and are correspondingly hefty. They come in different contours and are adjustable for height, depending on the shape you’re trying to produce. By walking metal back and forth between them, you stretch it, producing a simple curve. Change angle and put the same piece back in the wheel, you can make a compound curve. Change anvil height, and you can planish, smoothing out dimples or hammer marks. Given enough time, a wheel’s pressure can polish metal to a mirror finish, no chemicals.

Last week the high-horned red cow finally calved. Baby was solid red like mama. I sat there the next day a’horseback and studied him for a few minutes. Long enough to figure out it was a bull calf and getting’ plenty to eat. Satisfied, I swung away and started back through the mesquite on a cow trail. I heard a mama bawlin’ and looked back to see that it was the high-horned red cow. I swept the horizon for her calf, then looked down. There he was right behind my horse’s hind leg trailin’ along with us. I stopped. The little calf bumped into my stirrup. He looked confused. He could hear his mama but something didn’t smell right. I reached down and patted his head. He looked up at me, as if to say, “What are you doin’ here?”
