Aluminium sheets for standing seam roofs and walls can be produced in many different finishes, such as natural aluminium, copper, stainless steel and a range of coatings. As aluminium is both stable and durable, it can be used as a roofing or cladding material without a protective coating. Sheets can also be perforated to create interesting textural effects. Stucco-embossed natural aluminium diffuses light to create a durable, warm, matt finish. With prolonged exposure to the elements, the original reflective surface will dull to a uniform patina. Changes in appearance will be consistent on every elevation. If colour is required, colour coatings can be specified, including metallic finishes and bespoke colours. Some finishes may require additional coats of colour, primer or UV protection.

The irony of working on a large scale is that Kikukawa’s staff fuss over millime­ters. Yuji Tsuchiya, a veteran sales man­ager, leads us to a back corner of the main factory building. There, he runs his hands over a curved 2-mm-thick sheet of bronze: a sample of the panels used for the Bloomberg project. “This was a reject,” says Tsuchiya. Interact with each orb as soon as you can after shooting the respective planet, then your final one will always be the Sun. Before you shoot the Sun, make sure you have enough ammo and Pack a Punch weapons because you’re nearing the final boss fight.

An intricate network of minuscule crevices adorns the skin surface of the African bush elephant. By retaining water and mud, these micrometer-wide channels greatly help elephants in regulating their body temperature and protecting their skin against parasites and intense solar radiation. Today, researchers at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) report in the journal Nature Communications that African elephant skin channels are true fractures of the brittle and desquamation-deficient outermost skin layer. The scientists show that the elephant’s hyperkeratinised skin grows on a lattice of millimetric elevations, causing fractures due to local mechanical stress from bending.

David Farrell Melton has been playing music for as long as he can remember. The day after her first concert The Newcastle Morning Herald was raptuous in its praise of “the queen of song”, saying “the glorious voice that has charmed millions of listeners in various parts of the world was heard in all its wondrous beauty and the audience that crowded the hall was captivated by its magic spell.

They split us into teams. Mine was called Custer’s Last Chance and Bugle Corps. They hauled us out into the beautiful, rollin’ grain fields in Tripp County halfway between Dog Ear and Old Lodge Creek. Very quickly we formed into a cohesive family unit. If you’ve ever seen a troop of baboons high on bus fumes, you’ll be able to picture it. We lined up in a company front at the end of a milo field. It was as straight as a cracked windshield. At the signal from Wes, our team leader, we invaded the field with the precision and practiced skill of the Houston Oilers backfield coming ashore at the Bay of Pigs!
