Each morning at daylight the three of them would rake the beans in a pile and pitchfork them into the pickup. There they’d fork ‘em into Raymond’s rebuilt combine, an Allis Chambers model 60 with John Deere wheels and a plywood box.

The saxophonist’s latest release is Classic! Live At Newport – his 20th and final album for Blue Note Records – and this engagement will pair his golden horn with the wonderfully adept rhythm section of pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Peter Slavov, and drummer Lamy Istrefi Jr. As a leader, Joe Lovano has released some 26 albums since 1985′s Tones, Shapes & Colors (Soul Note) including his GRAMMY Award–winning 52nd Street Themes (Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, 2000). As a sideman, he’s worked with some of the best in the business including Steve Kuhn, Charlie Haden, and especially drummer Paul Motian with whom Lovano recorded seventeen albums from 1982–2006. A New York City staple for years, every member of Rosnes’ group has an extremely impressive résumé and brings their absolute best to this group. If her recent sold-out appearances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola are any indication, audiences should expect to hear some of Rosnes’ award-winning original compositions and perhaps a few choice selections by such artists as Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, and Billy Strayhorn. Dr. Herriot was called to her house one day with the complaint that Perry wasn’t eating. Doc withdrew Perry from his cage and reassured Missus that his beak was overgrown. He could fix it in a jiffy. Missus was so relieved. She loved Perry’s singing so much. Doc carefully snipped the beak and when he went to replace the bird in his cage, he made the startling discovery that Perry was dead as a crowbar!
