Commenter: ColleenI graduated in 1997 at age 30. As a single mother with two small children, I made the decision to obtain a bachelors degree in order to make a better life for my family. I attended school full-time and worked part time, and obtained my degree in four years cum laude. Fortunately, I qualified for some low income grants, and I used student loans to help make ends meet during my four years in school. At the time I graduated, my consolidated student loan balance was just under $30k. After graduating, I remarried, and my husband and I planned to pay off the loan balance as quickly as possible. However, my husband was injured and unable to work for a long period, making it impossible for me to pay toward my loans during this time. With my forebearance options exhausted, my loans went into default and were sent to collections. My total loan balance is now $66k, including a whopping $18k (!!!!) in penatlties the collection company will receive for making approximately 20 phone calls to me arranging to put my loan into a "rehabilitation" program. They are selling it at auction. Then they’ll come after me, no doubt. My office is trying to get everyone to take jobs elsewhere because of the budget deficit. I have three teenagers, no savings, no retirement. There is no relief in bankruptcy. I was lied to when I started law school. They told me the loans would be a matter of car payments for ten years max, which seemed a lot to me at the time. Here I am 18 years later, with a debt that is enormous and growing. Stuck out there, I improvised with a long fence pole I found near an irrigation pump. I jacked it up with the Handyman Chin Smasher and Slim Mechanism. Up one, down two, up one, down one, and so on. From the rear I wedged the pole over the axle and chained it tight. The pole stuck out several feet behind the bumper. Then I lowered the truck down by pounding the jack with a calf puller until the bumper rested on the protruding pole. I waited until a lone irrigator passed by and had him drag me ten miles back to the farm shop. I limped in like a one leg-ged cross country skier!
